Spiritual Journey

Cow Protection

In Vedic tradition, cows are highly respected and are considered like mothers because they provide milk, which is essential for human life. Bulls, on the other hand, help in farming by plowing fields. Protecting cows and bulls is seen as an important duty of a civilized society.
According to ancient scriptures, cows provide five useful products: milk, ghee (clarified butter), yogurt, dung, and urine. These are used in religious rituals and have medicinal benefits. Milk is considered a special food that helps improve brain function and understanding of spiritual knowledge. It can be turned into many delicious foods, and even cow dung and urine have useful properties.
In ancient times, Lord Krishna emphasized cow protection and agriculture. When he was on Earth, there was plenty of milk, butter, and yogurt. Cow protection was a key part of society, and cows were treated with great care. Many Hindu temples still have places called goshala, where cows are kept and taken care of.
ISKCON Bangalore started their goshala in 1986 with just one cow and a calf. Now, they have 25 cows that are kept clean and healthy by trained caretakers. The cows are bathed daily and allowed to roam freely. Their milk is used in temple offerings. When cows grow old and stop giving milk, they are moved to a farm where they can live peacefully. Young bulls are also taken to the farm, where they help with farming by plowing fields and carrying loads.
Ancient texts mention that feeding cows with grass and water every day brings great blessings. People can contribute by supporting cow care and donating to Our’s goshala to help maintain and care for the cows.
