Akshaya Patra: A Noble Initiative

Akshaya Patra, an initiative of ISKCON Bangalore, focuses on providing mid-day meals to underprivileged children in rural schools, supporting their education and overall well-being. Guided by its vision—“No child in India shall be deprived of education because of hunger”—the foundation has been a beacon of hope for many.

A Journey of Growth
What began in June 2000 by feeding 1,500 children in Bangalore has now grown to serve over 1.76 million children every day. With operations spanning 42 locations across 12 states of India, Akshaya Patra is recognized as the World’s Largest NGO-run Mid-Day Meal Program. The foundation’s mission is to extend this service to 5 million children.

Operational Excellence
Akshaya Patra collaborates with the Central and State Governments of India to provide nutritious meals to students in Government and Government-aided schools. Its operations are executed through two distinct kitchen models:

  1. Centralized Kitchens: Designed for urban and semi-urban areas, these kitchens are highly mechanized, employing advanced technology to prepare meals for thousands of children in just a few hours.
  2. Decentralized Kitchens: Built in remote and inaccessible areas, these kitchens empower local women by involving them in the meal preparation process.

Impact and Recognition
The mid-day meal program has brought significant positive changes across India. A 2006 study by A C Nielsen (Mumbai) highlighted several benefits, including:

  • Improved nutritional status of children.
  • Increased school enrollment and attendance.
  • Reduced drop-out rates.
  • Enhanced focus, attention span, and academic performance among students.

Akshaya Patra’s operations have also gained academic recognition. In 2007, Harvard Business School conducted a study on the foundation’s precision and time management, incorporating it into their MBA curriculum as a case study. Additionally, the ICAI (Institute of Chartered Accountants of India) awarded the organization the Gold Shield for excellence in financial reporting.

Akshaya Patra’s commitment to eradicating hunger and supporting education truly sets it apart as a transformative initiative.
