Hare Krishna Movement
The Hare Krishna Movement, also known as the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), is a worldwide spiritual organization founded in 1966 by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. It is based on the teachings of the ancient Indian scriptures, particularly the Bhagavad Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam. The movement’s central focus is the practice of bhakti-yoga, which involves cultivating love and devotion to the Supreme Lord, Sri Krishna.
The Hare Krishna Movement emphasizes the importance of chanting the holy names of God, particularly the maha-mantra: “Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama, Hare Hare.” Chanting this maha-mantra is the yuga-dharma for the Kaliyuga, the present age, and it is mentioned in scriptures as a powerful spiritual practice that can purify the heart and mind and bring one closer to God.
